Happy Friday, Happy Spring!

Wow. I’m so excited about the response I got to the (now somewhat officially named) Sound Swap. I’m gonna pull together the details this weekend and will have an official post about the whole business by Monday. A few items for thought:
1. I did some research, as I am wont (and trained) to do, and discovered that technically, ALL mix CD making is illegal (with regard to copyright, that is). Now, as a musician myself, and as the friend of many musicians, I have spent a chunk of time carefully considering what I feel is fair with regard to copyright, intellectual property, etc. in a mix CD exchange. I don’t want to rip anyone off, and afterall, the point of this swap is to get people into new music, with the hopes that they will eventually purchase (in the fair and ethical manner of their choice) the music they enjoy. We’re gonna keep this small scale and responsible. The swap rules will reflect this concept of fairness.
2. I’m so excited that there were so much international interest expressed in the swap. Just think about how many new bands we can all discover this way! I encourage all non-Americans to participate. It’s no less illegal to mail mix CDs internationally than it is cross-country or cross-town. I’ll organize the swap to take into account folks who don’t want/don’t feel comfortable doing overseas mailings. But I say “bring it on!”
3. I’d like to create some kind of a button for this, ’cause why not brag about it? Does anyone know anything about doing this (i.e. is anyone willing to do it)?
4. I’m still considering the inclusion of fiber. It’s my inclination to say “Yes, yes, yes, FIBER!” but some folks love music but not so much fiber. I might include this as a choose-your-own-sound-swap-adventure part of the swap. We’ll see…. Any suggestions welcome. In fact,
5. Any suggestions on any of this are welcome!
Oh, I have so much knitting to show you, but no photos (still not remedied my internet). But last night, I tried the fiber-cocaine that is sweeping the blogosphere right now — BOTH mitered squares AND crochet (inspired by these inspiring folk!). Speaking of inspiration, if you haven’t yet, check this out. Drool.
Oooh! Fun!
I thought there was some kind of fair use exception for mixed CDs. But perhaps that is just wishful thinking on my part! Or a big fat rationalization dressed up in legal-sounding language. Ha! Anyway, I think the individual mixed CD made as a gift for a friend is hardly the problem. And I have often purchased music as a result of getting such CDs or hearing music on mp3 blogs.
Yay!!! This sounds so cool! I’m looking forward to it!
Um…. anything you want in a button specifically? I’d be more than happy to make a couple!
Mitered squares and crochet? In a single item??
Hey, you should check out pandora.com and see what all you can find to listen to. You put in a group or song and they play music that’s similar, it’s a great way to find new music that you like. I’m absolutely addicted to it, I’ve been listening to it all day every day for weeks now. And it’s all free!
Have fun with your swap!
