[Warning: this post has very little to do with knitting. In my post-orangina daze, I’m taking a break. Not sure where to go next. Feel free to skip along if you don’t want to hear about computers. or beer. or my dissertation.]

What a beautiful memorial day weekend! In the past, I’ve spent memorial day weekend at the Hills of Home Festival, just up the mountain from my old home in Virginia. This year, though, the drive was just too far. Besides, I’m heading down to Mt. Airy, North Carolina this coming weekend for their fiddler’s convention (more chances to flatfoot!) and couldn’t spend two weeks away from the city and my diss.
That said, travelling just became much easier for me. Why, you might ask. Well, let me introduce the newest member of my macintosh family:

Magda, new little laptop (yes, I do name all of my computers. The big computer in the picture is “The Brain”. My iPod, which Minty noted is missing from this picture, is named Sparkie — the first iPod, stolen last fall, was Sparky-with-a-’y'). Magda has made dissertation writing much, much easier by enabling the possibility of working at the coffee shop, in the library, at my parents house or, yes, even outside my tent at a fiddlers convention. I’ve suddenly become much more productive. Case in point: Yesterday, I met with my dissertation group here:

The Standard Tap, a delightful bar/restaurant in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philly. Good beer. Delicious food. Large tables and a patience for three grad students with computers. Gotta love them. Realizing you have hundreds of pages left to write seems to go down much easier with a pint or two of local beer. And check out their sign:

Lovely sheep!
Speaking of good beer, for those of you Philadelphians who know and love the Foodery on 10th and Pine, but haven’t yet discovered the Foodery’s newest location, let me suggest that you run, not walk, to N.L. and check out their location there. I stopped in a few weeks ago with a friend and practically fell to my knees in front of their coolers. It’s like a shrine to beer. Their selection is like nothing I have ever seen, and this is not something that I feel I can say often. Besides, they even had this:

Gösser is the beer I drank when I lived in Austria. It’s not the world’s best beer, but man! it’s hard to find in the US. I bought nothing… just browsed, oggled, and asked them if they were hiring (unfortunately, they are not. Maybe this is a good thing).
Enough about beer. Today, I’m gonna give Magda a break and do my work the old fashioned way:

But I leave you with my favorite Philly/Project Spectrum to date. Found at 3rd and Girard:

Yay for laptops! I name mine, too. My older laptop is Kenshin. This one is Rurouni (wanderer in Japanese and part of an anime character’s name). My 40 gb ipod is P-Chan (another anime character, and -chan is a diminutive and affectionate nickname). My old ipod shuffle is Bake-Neko (ghost cat, yet another anime character - sensing a theme??).
I love that last image, too.
I hadn’t heard of either of those Philly places, but I’m compiling a list of restaurants R and I absolutely have to go to soon after we move. Two more for the list!
love, love, love Standard Tap. Last time I was up there the new Foodery was about to open or maybe just had. I used to live at 7th and Pine, so was crazy close to the Foodery in CC.
So hey–June 10, you around in Philly? I’m coming for a visit!
Randomly, I had named my iPod “mintyfresh” but that was before it was 100% MY identiy. I should rename her, I guess!
ooh…pretty new laptop. i’m jealous! my laptop is six years old now and close to full-on dying, and i’m sooooo desperate for a pretty new one.
Oh I am so glad I am not the only one to name my Apple Equipment. My Macbook’s name is Pricilla. My friend has Elvis. (they are in love.) I have Scarlett, my red Ipod, the second, as my first, Lady in Red was stolen. Before that, It was Miss Pink, and then Shuffle Shuffle. (Shuffle Shuffle met his end in the washer/dryer world, and I sold Miss Pink when I needed some extra cash.)
I love that everyone names their laptops & Ipods!! Too cool! Around our house we name everything. Our huge old Ipod is the “deathstar”, my old dell laptop is “helper” man I could go on & on!!!
Magda is lovely! I love my MacBook, its the best. Good luck on your dissertation!
I heart my Mac!
I clicked over hear from Pepperknit’s blog due to your recommendation of The Time Traveler’s Wife (one of my most favorite books). I was skimming and scrolling down until I saw the beer. Stopped me in my tracks - Austrian beer! My husband and I are living in Vienna for 4.5 months (which are almost over). So, I had to drop a line to say hi.
p.s. I also name my electronic helpers.

Rose finally bought this lamp lights, when a little seductive look, but I like light blue floral side of that circle
